FCR (Feed Conversion Ratio) Explained

FCR, or Feed Conversion Ratio, measures how efficiently birds turn feed into body weight. A lower FCR means less feed per kg of weight — and higher profit.

How to calculate FCR

FCR = total feed consumed (kg) ÷ total live weight produced (kg). For example, 3,000 kg of feed producing 2,000 kg of birds gives an FCR of 1.5.

How to improve FCR

  • Use good-quality, stage-appropriate feed.
  • Maintain brooding temperature and ventilation.
  • Keep water clean and always available.
  • Follow vaccination and biosecurity to avoid growth setbacks.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good FCR for broilers?
Lower is better. Well-managed farms often target around 1.5–1.7, though this depends on breed, feed and conditions.
Why does FCR matter?
Feed is the biggest cost in poultry, so even a small FCR improvement can noticeably raise profit per batch.
